On October 1, 1798, Samuel Crowell was included on a tax list for Newton, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He owned 40 acres, upon which he had a house made of logs measureing 26 ft by 20 ft with 10 windows and 27 lights. In addition to the house, he had a stone kitchen measuring 16 by 14 feet.
